Bayside family appeals to pet owners to ensure animals are on a leash after dog attack

AUSTRALIA -- The Taylor family of Wynnum are appealing for dog owners to keep their pets on a leash after a vicious attack on their labrador left them almost $800 out of pocket.

Dan Taylor was walking his four-year-old labrador Tucker along Andrew St in Lota on April 7 when he was attacked by what he believes was a staffordshire pit bull cross.

The dog, which he said was being walked by a girl but was not on a leash, grabbed Tucker around the throat and almost ripped off his right ear.

Tucker's ear was stitched by a vet and he was treated for gashes and lacerations. He also required a drain in his neck and has had ongoing treatment.

"This dog was vicious and I believe it would kill a child," Mr Taylor said.

"I think I'm a pretty tough guy but this really shook me up. It was scary and I can't imagine what it would be like to see a child in that situation."

The attack has been reported to council but Mr Taylor wanted to warn people to be on the lookout.

"I'm also pleading for dog owners to take more responsibility. My dog is a typical lab he will just like you to death.

"The bottom line is put your dog on a leash."

Council officers patrolled the area but have been unable to locate the dog.

"We will work with the victim and a witness in an attempt to locate the offending dog so that further action can be undertaken," a spokeswoman said.

The fine for failing to register a dog is $220.
