UNITED KINGDOM -- A puppy was left fighting for its life after being “mauled” by two other dogs.
Amie McColl, owner of eight-month-old springer spaniel Lola, was also injured while trying to stop the attack in Castle Douglas.
The 28-year-old, who was walking her pet near to the family home with five-year-old son Kalim at the time, said: “It was terrifying. I went for a walk with my son near the old railway and Lola had ran off.
“I gave her a whistle and I heard a yelp. I gave another whistle and then I heard another yelp.”
Amie went to investigate and discovered two Staffordshire-type dogs attacking Lola.
She said: “One had her pinned down. They were mauling her.”
Amie screamed for help and a neighbour came and took her son inside while she tried to wrestle the puppy free.
She added: “I thought she was dead. There was blood everywhere.”
Once Amie had freed Lola, she rushed the pup to the vets for emergency treatment.
Lola suffered serious injuries to her kidneys, ears, throat and legs and had to spend a week in care.
But despite her condition, Lola has now almost made a full recovery since the attack on March 20.
Amie said: “She is lucky to be alive.”
Police have confirmed that the two other dogs involved in the incident have since been destroyed.
Amie added: “We feel bad that they (the other owners) have had to get their dogs put down but this should not have happened. Lola could have died.”
Police said that a 26-year-old man from Castle Douglas had been charged under The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and reported to the Procurator Fiscal.
