Dog that Bit 2 Heyburn Children Euthanized

IDAHO -- A Great Dane that bit two Heyburn children on separate occasions was euthanized late Monday afternoon after 10 days of rabies quarantine.

“The dog has been euthanized as per the owner’s request,” said Heyburn City Administrator Greg Richins Tuesday afternoon.

The dog’s owner, Ruth Elisa Rockwell, still faces a misdemeanor citation for vicious dog at large in the city of Heyburn. She is scheduled for a court appearance on the charge at 8:30 a.m., April 25 in Minidoka County 5th District Magistrate Court.

On April 5 the dog bit a 7-year-old girl. The child required 22 stitches to her forehead and stitches to her mouth and bottom lip to close the wounds, according to a Heyburn police report. The child also had one eye that was swollen shut.

Last August the dog bit a 10-year-old boy after it knocked down a partially-constructed fence while the child was walking past the residence. The boy sustained serious wounds to the face and head. The dog was quarantined to check for rabies but the owner was not cited.

The dog, named Thunder, was euthanized after animal advocates tried to get him released to the Indian Dane Rescue in San Marcos, Calif.
