Greenville Police: Pit bull attacks 5-year-old child

NORTH CAROLINA -- A pit bull attacked a 5-year-old boy in Greenville, sending the child to a hospital, police said.

The boy was playing in the front yard of a duplex home at 2120 Oak Bend Dr., when the dog escaped from a nearby area and attacked, according to Greenville Police. It happened at  about 6 p.m. on Monday.

The pit bull punctured the 5-year-old boy's lower leg and he was taken to a hospital, police said.

Although his condition was not released, the dog's owner, Jasmine Wilson, said the boy is expected to be okay.

Wilson also told NewsChannel 12 that the dog, named Jada, is about 6 months old. Wilson said she was not home during the attack, her uncle was.

"He left the door open... I think he said [the dog] just bit [the boy] and then backed up on her own. It wasn't really like a grab bite, where she held on to his leg or anything. Police came out and said that he did have bites on his legs," Wilson said.

Animal control officials were notified, police said.  The investigation is ongoing.
