Man abducts estranged girlfriend's dogs, killing one

VIRGINIA -- A Manassas area man is facing animal cruelty and burglary charges after police said he broke into his estranged girlfriend’s house and stole her two dogs, killing one of them.

Police responded to the 7500 block of Quail Run Lane in Manassas at 3:43 p.m. on April 17 to investigate a burglary, Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok said.

A woman told police someone broke into her house through an unlocked basement sliding glass door during the day, police said.

The woman told police she found blood throughout her home and her two dogs, male and female West Highland Terriers, were missing.

Police investigated and determined Khanh Hoang Hong, the homeowner’s estranged boyfriend, broke into the house, and took the dogs, duct taping both of the dogs' legs and mouths before putting them in his trunk.

Hong drove to the Copeland Drive area, where he dumped the female dog on the side of the road, Perok said. A woman later found the dead dog in a trash bag there, police said.

Hong was driving in the Thoroughfare Drive area when he discovered the other dog had broken free from the duct tape and was moving around in the trunk, police said. Hong then let the dog go, Perok said. A passing driver found the dog and took him to an animal hospital.

That dog was treated and released to its owner, police said.

Police searched Hong’s home, 7567 Quail Run Lane, Monday and seized unspecified evidence, Perok said.

Hong, 44, was arrested and charged with burglary, two counts of felony animal cruelty and two counts of grand larceny of an animal.

He is being held at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail without bond and has a court date on June 13.
