VIRGINIA -- A police officer shot and killed two pit bulls that were fighting in a cage on Saturday, police said Monday.
Officers were called to the 2300 block of Peach St. about 9 a.m. Animal Control officers were already at the residence, where male and female pit bulls in a cage inside a shed were fighting, according to a police press release.
Animal Control officers could not get the dogs out of the cage, the press release said.
“The female pit bull became more aggressive and continued to attack the male. Both dogs were suffering from serious visible injuries,” the press release said. “A responding police officer fired two rounds from a shotgun, striking both dogs. Both dogs died at the scene.”
Police wrote the owner of the animals a summons on a charge of misdemeanor animal cruelty.
