CALIFORNIA -- The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department shot and killed a pit bull on Friday in French Camp, where officers have spent three days searching for a pack of wild dogs responsible for more than 200 livestock deaths.
The Sheriff's department couldn't confirm that the dog was part of an aggressive pack involved in four attacks since April 19. But deputies and animal control officers will continue searching through the weekend for the six to 10 remaining dogs, said Deputy Les Garcia, spokesman for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies and animal control officers responded to a report of a pit bull attacking several chickens around 9 a.m., Garcia said. The chickens' owner shot at the dog and it fled.
After searching for an hour, officers saw the dog and chased it toward a parking lot near the Stockton Airport. An animal control officer fired a tranquilizer dart at the pit bull, but it bounced off the dog.
A deputy shot the pit bull before it reached a populated area, Garcia said.
