Abused dogs discovered during Harvey resident William Roberson's eviction

ILLINOIS -- A Harvey man was charged with animal cruelty after Cook County Sheriff's deputies enforcing a court-ordered eviction said they found several abused dogs including one that had died.

The Cook County Sheriff has charged William Roberson, 37, with two counts of felony aggravated cruelty to animals and nine misdemeanors -- one count of cruelty to animals and eight counts of owner's duties.

Cook County Sheriff's Police Animal Crimes Unit arrived to the location at approximately 9:25 a.m. on Thursday after seven pit bull type dogs and a Chihuahua were found by the evictions team, the Sheriff's office said.

The Sheriff's office said one dog was found dead in the basement of the house along with another emaciated dog that could not walk because of a leg injury. Another emaciated dog was found in a crate outside of the home, authorities said. Four other dogs in better condition were also found.

Authorities say there was no indication of dog fighting at the location.

South Suburban Humane Society took custody of the dogs and they were taken to a veterinarian for treatment. The body of the deceased dog was also turned over to South Suburban Humane Society.
Roberson is scheduled to appear in bond court in Markham on Friday.
