NEW YORK -- A Harlem man was arrested after his dog was found so neglected that its matted fur caused vets to amputate a paw, officials said Saturday.
Jose Andujar, 59, was booked on animal cruelty charges Friday, after ASPCA investigators found he was the owner of the 13-year-old Shih Tzu, Daisy, who was brought to a shelter as a stray this month, officials say.
The malnourished, 10-pound pooch was thin and dehydrated, and couldn’t walk on her right hind leg because of her knotted fur.
“The dog’s fur was so matted it acted as a tourniquet, cutting off circulation to the limb,” said Joseph Pentangelo, an ASPCA spokesman.
Andujar faces a year in jail if convicted.
