Lucedale man accused in dog's burning death had been arrested in mother's stabbing

MISSISSIPPI -- A Lucedale man accused of setting his dog on fire Thursday had been arrested on a charge of stabbing his mother.

Brandon Pierce, 20, was arrested March 29 after deputies responded to a report of a stabbing at Pierce's family home, sheriff's spokeswoman Shonna Pierce (no relation) said.

Deputies had found Pierce's mother with a small puncture wound to her back and arrested Pierce on a charge of misdemeanor domestic violence.

He was wanted on warrants for failure to appear in court on that charge and on a charge of simple possession of marijuana when he's accused of setting fire to his dog Socks, 5, a Chihuahua mix.

A 911 caller said Pierce was "going crazy on meth."

Deputies found the dog doused in a flammable liquid and burning. They said Pierce was acting "erratically," saying he "wanted the dog to go to heaven."

They took him into custody and rushed the dog to George County Animal Hospital, which tried to save it, but the dog died.

Pierce remained jailed, and deputies were continuing to investigate to determine if they could upgrade the charge against him to felony aggravated animal cruelty.

Misdemeanor animal cruelty is punishable by up to a $1,000 fine or six months in jail.
