KENTUCKY -- A five-year-old and his mother were attacked by a neighbor's pit bull Thursday afternoon.
They were at Three Rivers Machine Shop, and Sheriff Bobby Davidson said it's still not clear what happened to lead to the attack.
He said the boy was attacked first and the mother was injured as she tried to stop it. It was a man inside the shop who finally was able to get the situation under control.
"He was able to get the dog down and they were able to get a rope around it, and at that time, the dog got under a vehicle," he said. "We just let it lay until we arrived on scene."
Fire Chief Terry Stringer was one of the first ones there and said the injuries, while serious, did not look life-threatening. The mother and child were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Stringer, who also sits on the county fiscal court, said there is a leash law in effect for that area, but wants to look into other options to strengthen the ordinance.
"When you respond to the things and you see these things happening, it makes you look at it a little bit different," he said. "I don't know what I can do but I'm going to work on it."
The dog was taken to the Crittenden County Shelter and will be held there for the time being. The sheriff said the owners could be charged with harboring a vicious animal.
