Police: 3 men injured in Holly Hill pit bull attacks

FLORIDA -- Three people were attacked by pit bulls on Ridgewood Avenue in Holly Hill early Friday morning, Holly Hill Police Chief Mark Barker said.

The first attack occurred at 3:35 a.m. Billy Boles, 42, reported to police that he was walking in the area of Walker and State avenues when he was approached by two mixed pit bull breed dogs acting aggressively towards him. Boles tried to run but the dogs attacked him, Barker said.

Boles suffered severe lacerations to his lower leg and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he is undergoing surgery to a severe bite injury to a lower leg, Holly Hill's police chief said.

Officers went searching for the dogs but could not find them.
Then at 5:28 a.m., Holly Hill police were again called to a second bite incident. Frank Andrsano said he was walking to work and when he got in front of 1216 Ridgewood Ave., two mixed pit bull dogs came by him acting aggressively. Andrsano also tried to run but the dogs attacked him, Barker said.

Andrsano suffered bites to his arms and legs. He was also transported to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment, Barker said.

Investigating officers were able to locate the dogs at 1346 State Ave. and identified the owners as Anthony Berkert and Michael Berkert, police said.

The Berkerts, who face charges of allowing a dog to run at large and other possible charges, said they only owned one dog. The other dog belongs to a friend they only know as Elizabeth, who is currently in jail, Barker said.

An investigation revealed that the two dogs, Roxie, a female and Trip, a male, broke out of the State Avenue home's backyard through an unsecured gate, Barker said.

As Holly Hill officers worked the two cases, they also got a call from Halifax Health Medical Center personnel at 6:15 a.m. reporting that a third individual, who has not yet been interviewed or identified, was at the hospital after beeen attacked by pit bulls. That person took a taxi to the emergency room, Barker said.

The third attack is reported to have occurred at Ridgewood and Flomich avenues, Barker said.

The dogs were seized by Holly Hill Animal Control Officers and were being taken to Halifax Humane Society to be quarantined, Barker said.

Police have no records that the dogs have been deemed dangerous before but only have information on a dog on dog attack at the State Avenue address, Barker said.
