CALIFORNIA -- A longtime member of the Kern County Sheriff's Posse was injured in a fall Friday following the posse's performance in the Stampede Days Rodeo.
The veteran member was thrown from his horse as it tried to fight off an attack by a stray dog.
The attack left the horse with severe cuts and puncture wounds on its chest.
The dog was chased away by another posse member and the horse was treated by an on-scene veterinarian.
A department news release said Bakersfield Animal Control was notified of the incident.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. as 68-year-old Anthony Mungary was riding his horse just outside of the fairground property.
Mungary is a 22-year veteran of the Sheriff's Posse.
