MASSACHUSETTS -- A 3-year-old New Bedford girl suffered "serious injury" when she was bitten by a pit bull Friday morning, Police Detective Capt. Steven Vicente said.
The girl was taken to Hasboro Children's Hospital in Providence with bites to her neck, arms and legs. At mid-afternoon, hospital officials said she remained in treatment and her condition had not been determined.
Detective Lt. John Chaves of the Major Crimes Unit said Friday night the girl's injuries are considered serious because of her age but are not life-threatening.
She was transported to Hasbro as a precaution because of her age, he said.
The girl was walking with her grandmother along Brock Avenue in the vicinity of Warren Street when the dog "somehow got out of the gated yard," Vicente said.
The one year-old pit bull has been quarantined, Vicente said.
