The owner of the home on Dunklin Bridge Road, Dale Ferguson, was cited on nine counts, five of which were animal cruelty.
By Thursday night, the animals have been moved to the Greenville County Animal Care shelter, where staff said this influx of animals means they need extra donations.
The shelter hopes that people can help with donations for supplies or to foster or adopt the other animals there so they'll have room to properly take care of the new ones.
There were 142 dogs seized in all, plus six quails, three chickens, a rabbit and a cat taken from the home near Fountain Inn.
Code enforcement officers put up official notices warning that no one can live, or be in the home because of its conditions.
Animal Control said Ferguson surrendered the animals to the county. Now the shelter needs to get them healthy and ready for adoption.
"You can imagine what happens when you all of a sudden have a couple hours' notice to take in this many animals," said Susan Bufano, spokeswoman for Greenville County Animal Care. "The staff has to go into overdrive and we have to really ask for donations, of people's time, of their interest in adopting or fostering, not just these animals, but just to create more space for us in the shelter."
Animal Control officers responded to the home after they received a call that there was a "large" amount of dogs there. When officers arrived, they said they found them to be "skinny" with "no shelter, no water"
Animal Control said Ferguson was being cooperative and that there didn't appear to be any malicious intent but that he thought he was taking care of them well enough.
Ferguson will appear in court on June 26.
