Children waiting at bus stop among those bit by 2 dogs

MISSOURI -- A dog owner is in custody after police say two of his dogs bit a neighbor and two children waiting at the bus stop Tuesday morning.

Two ambulances rushed to East 12th Street and Bennington Avenue just after 7 a.m., however, the victims' injuries were not believed to be serious.

The two female dogs are in quarantine at Kansas City's municipal animal shelter for 10 days while officials monitor them for signs of rabies. Officials initially said they were pit bulls, but have clarified to say they are pit bull mixes.

Francisco Hernandez and a friend were waiting at a bus stop when they attacked. The 12-year-old said he saw the two dogs, and they were barking aggressively. He said they attacked, puncturing his arm and legs.

"And then they came at me. Both of them," he said. "They just jumped me. This happened all right there."

A neighbor nearby saw what was happening and fended the dogs off with a wooden board.

That neighbor said he was attacked moments earlier by the same two pit bulls when he was trying to feed his own dogs. The man was knocked to the ground, but was able to get the board and defend himself but not before the tore into his skin.

The man's girlfriend said he suffered puncture wounds to his arm, shoulder and leg.

Francisco said he had seen both dogs roaming freely in the neighborhood before.  He was taken to the hospital by his mother.

While police waited for animal control to arrive, officers pulled out their weapons in order to protect themselves from one of the two dogs in the back yard of the property.

Francisco said he is grateful his neighbor came to help and feels the dogs should be monitored better.

Animal Control Officer James Donovan said the owner was cited for failure to provide dog licensing permits, not having his dogs spayed and not containing the dogs. The owner was taken into custody on a warrant for an unrelated issue.

The city has had no prior issues with the dogs. If the dogs do not have rabies, a municipal judge will decide the fate of the dogs.

Donovan said it's fortunate no one was hurt worse.

"I don't know if this could have been avoided due to the aggressive nature of these dogs," Donovan said. "If you do have animals that run up on you, stay calm, don't panic and don't try to run away."
