The small dog was apparently forced down the storm drain, a witness told first-responders.
Sacramento police gathered information regarding the incident.
Firefighters responded to a field at Power Inn and Calvine roads about 5:45 p.m. Sunday where the dog was trapped 25 feet into the drain.
Air monitoring devices were put into place and ventilation equipment was used to improve air quality in the drain for the pooch. Then, firefighter Nick Mack, wearing breathing apparatus, lowered himself 15 feet to the bottom before crawling along to reach the hapless and helpless dog.
The dog had a bike cable wrapped around his hind legs, which restricted his movement, according to a press release from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. Mack freed the dog from the cable and the dog was brought to the surface.
"We all have dogs and we all love dogs," Metro Fire Battalion Chief Maurice Johnson said. "We are just glad to be able to give this guy a second chance."
Sacramento County Animal Control took custody of the dog.
