Dog mauled to death in city centre

UNITED KINGDOM -- It happened in Spinningfields, Manchester city centre, on Bank Holiday Monday, 6 May 2013, at about 4.45pm.

Stephanie Hopwood, 24 from Sandbach, was enjoying a sunny afternoon at Spinningfields with her 18-month-old toy Yorkshire Terrier, Daisy.

Daisy was on her lead beside Stephanie, near to the Oast House, when she was suddenly attacked by the other dog, which was not on a lead.

RIP Daisy

Daisy was horrifically mauled by the other dog and sustained fatal injuries. She was put to sleep later that day, leaving Stephanie traumatised.

She managed to take a photo of the other dog, believed to be an Akita-type breed, and its owner.

Following the attack the owner put his dog back on its lead and they both walked off passed Manchester Crown Court, Crown Square, towards Bridge Street.

PC Gavin Johnson, based at Bootle Street Police Station, said: “This poor dog was mauled to death in front of both the owner and shocked onlookers.

“I have absolutely no doubt that anyone who saw this would have been horrified and, no doubt, the image would have stayed with them.

“Since this happened we have spoken to a number of witnesses and have been working to identify the owner. Now we have taken the decision to release these photos as we want the public’s help to identify this man and his dog.

Coward who took his killer dog and fled the scene

“His animal was off the lead and clearly out of control. As tragic as Daisy’s demise it, what troubles us even more is how would this dog react to other dogs or even small children?

“So, if you saw this happen, and we haven’t yet spoken to you, or you recognise the man and dog in the picture, then please get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
