She called police once she noticed a man open the storage unit, place the dogs inside, and leave. The pups were inside for almost two hours while an officer talked with the manager about the renter and at the same time contacted the fire department to cut the lock off the unit.
Once the lock was cut, the officer spotted the dogs in a small cage at the back of the messy unit. There was no food or water for them. The officer went back to his patrol car to fetch some water to pour in a bowl.
Both dogs lapped up the water quickly. Animal Control came out to pick up the dogs.
We're told the manager knows the renter sometimes keeps his dogs inside the unit. He also rents out several units at the site.
"This is probably somebody that for one reason or another is going through some issues right now and may have lost their house or something. But that does make it harder to find," Senior Officer Harmon told us.
Police were able to track down the renter. He's a 68-year-old man who is now the subject of an animal cruelty investigation.
