Nashua police shot, kill pit bull that was attacking a man on a bike path

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- Nashua Police shot and killed an aggressive dog on a downtown street Wednesday morning.

Two bike patrol officers were talking with a man on the bike path near West Hollis and Chestnut streets around 11 a.m. Wednesday when they heard screaming nearby, said Deputy Chief Andrew Lavoie.

The officers found a large, brown and white pit bull attacking John Goba, 54, of Nashua. The dog had dragged Goba to the ground and was biting him on the back of his right hip near his buttocks, police said.

Tina Bennett, 44, of Nashua, had been walking the dog when it attacked and was on the ground trying to drag the dog off Goba when police arrived, police said.

One of the officers was able to grab the dog’s leash but also couldn’t pull it off Goba. The other officer, fearing Goba would be seriously hurt, fired one shot, killing the dog, police said.

Goba had at least one significant but non-life-threatening injury to the back of his leg and was treated at the scene by AMR Ambulance personnel, police said.

“All of a sudden it just attacked him. Thank God they were there,” he said. “I don’t know how you would get the pit bull off.”

Lavoie declined to name the officer that shot the dog.

The dog’s owner, Michael Bennett, is out of state but his sister provided police records that showed the dog’s vaccinations and licenses were up to date, police said.
