Oklahoma Highway Patrol rescues puppy on I-44

OKLAHOMA -- Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers stopped traffic on Wednesday to rescue a dog trapped on the inside wall of I-44.

Troopers saw the dog around lunchtime near the wall on the highway near Troop B headquarters, near the Memorial exit.

Captain George Brown told FOX23 he and Trooper Eddie Weilert were worried the dog would get hit by a car or cause a traffic problem if it ran into traffic, so they decided to get her.

Brown blocked traffic while Weilert walked to the wall. He said the dog was not moving and was scared when he approached it. They said when Weilert put a hand down, the dog, a female puppy, licked his hand and then jumped into his arms.

Troopers said she was very affectionate and loyal. The troopers kept her in a kennel until Tulsa Animal Control could take her.

The Tulsa Animal Shelter has the puppy on a three-day hold in case an owner comes forward. If no one claims her, she will be up for adoption on Monday.

They said the puppy is about 3-1/2 months old. She is white with blue eyes. Brown thinks she could be a mix with an American bulldog, but the animal shelter did not say what breed they thought she could be.

Brown told FOX23 they didn't name the dog, but if they did they'd call her Lucky. Officials at the animal shelter told FOX23 they're calling her Highway.
