Westfield police officer hospitalized after dog attack

MASSACHUSETTS -- A police officer is being evaluated and treated for injuries he received after a lunging pit bull forced him to fall backwards him down a flight of stairs.

 Westfield PoliceWestfield Police Sgt.Paul Beebe said the officer was responding to a domestic disturbance call at 71 Notre Dame St. shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, when he had to climb a narrow, steep set of stairs to access a living space.

Once at the top of the stairs a pit bull lunged at him, forcing him to step back, missing the top step and falling backwards down the staircase.

The injured officer was transported from the scene by Westfield Fire Department ambulance to the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
