Woman sentenced in Stone Co. dog hoarding case

MISSISSIPPI -- A woman accused of hoarding more than 100 dogs has been ordered to pay almost $7,500 and get psychological counseling, and is forbidden to own pets for at least a year.

Stone County Justice Court Judge Jeffrey O'Neal fined Shirley Gai nearly $2,500 and ordered $5,000 in restitution to help cover costs of immediate care for animals seized in March from her property on Terry Cuevas Road.

The Sun Herald reports the 51-year-old Gai also received a year of probation at her sentencing Wednesday.

Gai has been free on a $3,000 bond after turning herself in on charges of animal cruelty and animal neglect. She lives in Lumberton, but had 116 mixed-breed dogs at her property in Stone County.
