Boy hospitalized after being attacked by dog

ARIZONA -- An 8-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull last week, Bullhead City police reported Friday.

Animal control officers were called to the 600 block of Citrus Street for a report of a vicious dog bite, police spokeswoman Emily Fromelt said.

The victim’s mother said that a neighborhood boy had come over at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday and asked her to help him look for his dog, which had gotten out.

The woman said no, but her son sneaked out to help look for the dog.

The dog attacked the boy in a driveway, Fromelt said.

Two Good Samaritans who were driving by initially thought the boy was playing with the dog, she said, but then decided to make sure the boy was OK and saw that the pit bull was actually attacking him.

Fromelt said the pair rushed to help the boy and were able to get the dog off him without being bitten. The other boy yelled at his dog, in an effort to get him off the victim.

The victim suffered severe bite wounds to his face, Fromelt said, and was taken to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center by ambulance.

Animal control authorities took custody of the dog for quarantine procedures. The dog was not licensed.

The neighbor boy’s mother, Jennifer Crystal Zarraga, 25, was cited and released for having a dog at large and having an unlicensed dog.

The victim was later taken by ambulance to Sunrise Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas, WARMC spokeswoman Sarah Morga-Mangum said Saturday.
