Child attacked by dog outside Ventura coffee shop

CALIFORNIA -- A 5-year-old girl was taken to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment Thursday evening after being attacked by a large dog in front of a coffee shop along the 600 block of East Main Street.

Witnesses told police that the girl was walking with a parent when they went past the Rottweiler, which was leashed.

The dog lunged at the girl, bitting into her abdomen and lifting her off the ground, “where it violently shook her in its mouth until the owner of the animal was able to pry the dog’s mouth open,” releasing the child, police said in a news release.

The incident occurred at 7:23 p.m.

The girl was treated for several puncture wounds and bruising.

An animal control officer, meanwhile, took the dog into custody, and it was being quarantined.
