TEXAS --For the past week, a South Texas couple has tried to reach the owner of a horse they believe is in dangerously poor health. The couple admits they're not horse experts, but say it doesn't take an expert to know when an animal is malnourished and neglected.
"His hooves are in terrible shape. Terrible shape" says Matthew Pinkston. Pinkston says the neglect of this horse is seen head to hoof.
"Just scratching him right here and it almost completely to the skin. I mean the fur is just rotting because of the lack of nutrition and lack of care," says Pinkston.
He and his family came across these two horses earlier in the week while following signs to a yard sale. The sight of bones bulging out the brown horse's torso has the Pinkstons stopping by the home daily, trying to offer their help.
"I am not going to let it drop. That's for sure. I just don't see why they can't take care of their animals," says Pinkston.
On Thursday, they left a note on the door offering to take over the care of the two horses.
"It's not my intent to come take their horses or anything, but it's my intent to see that the horses are taken care of," says Pinkston.
He calls this half eaten bail of hay, poor quality. And says despite this hose hanging inside the trough, there's been no water in it since Tuesday.
"Those troughs have got dry dirt and sand and weeds inside and it doesn't look there's been water in those troughs in at least a week or so," says Pinkston.
Despite all the signs Pinkston says poining to neglect, Jim Wells County Animal Control says their visits to the two horses proved otherwise.
"When I was there the horses weren't eating out of the buckets any more because they had already finished what they had, but they show signs to have been fed inside the buckets," says Mario Sendjo, Animal Control.
Sendejo admits the brown horse does appear to be in poor shape.Without talking with the owner there are too many factors that could explain why the horse appears that way.
No one including Action 10 News, the Pinkstons or Animal Control has been able to make contact with the horses' owner.
The Pinkstons say they will continue to fight to help these animals.
