NEW YORK -- A Cincinnatus man has been charged with shooting a dog after hearing it had killed chickens on his property, according to the Cortland County Sheriff's Department.
Jeffery P. Brown, 37, of 4988 Dutch Hill Rd., led the dog out to a field, tied it to a tree and shot and killed it on July 14, according to a news release. The dog wasn't his dog; it possibly belonged to a neighbor who lives about a quarter of a mile away, Cortland Sheriff's Capt. Mark Helms said.
Brown had caught the dog, a mixed-breed Shepherd, with a partially eaten chicken in his mouth. He deduced that this was the same dog that had killed several of his chickens over time, Lt. Robert Derksen said.
Brown was arrested for aggravated animal cruelty, a Class E felony. He is set to appear Aug. 7 before the Town of Cincinnatus Town Court to answer the charges.
