TENNESSEE -- Two apparently malnourished and neglected horses were rescued from a property on Glendale Road, Deputy Sheriff Michael Whitmer of the Cocke County Sheriff's Department reported.

Officers had received a top there were horses on Glendale Road that appeared to be starving and possibly sick, the report stated.

Whitmer said he and Animal Control officer Scotty Shelton arrived at the property, where they found the two horses who appeared severely underweight, with hip, shoulder bones, and ribs showing through the skin.

The pasture the horses were in was mostly dirt and mud, with little or no food supply for the horses, the report stated.

There was a pond on the property, but it was reportedly stagnant with mud, algae and bug larva.
