Longwood man charged with animal cruelty

NORTH CAROLINA -- A 27-year-old Longwood man was in the Brunswick County jail on Friday, charged with animal cruelty.

James Miles Butler of Pine Needle Road contacted Brunswick County Animal Protective Services and said his dog's head was swollen, according to a news release from the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

When an animal services officer arrived, he found a dog with a nylon leash embedded in his neck. "The lead appeared to have been around the dog's neck for a lengthy amount of time," the release said.

When the officer cut the dog free, he discovered wounds. The dog, a lab and pit mix, is being cared for by a veterinarian, who nicknamed the dog "Red."

Butler was charged with cruelty to animals and was in the jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond, according to the release.
