Christopher Whelan was convicted of failing to provide proper care for his dog Lady, a Rottweiler mix, in May. Lady was taken from Whelan's care last August after neighbours noticed the emaciated dog chained to a tree in his yard.
Today, Whelan was handed a suspended sentence plus a year of probation. He's also been ordered to pay restitution of about $750 to the SPCA, and is not to own any pet for three years. Whelan's only prior conviction was for failing to keep his dog tethered in 2005.
Judge Pamela Goulding said the case was quite appalling. Lady has since been adopted by a new family and is doing well.
