OKLAHOMA -- The mother of the three-year-old boy who was bit by a pit-bull in Midtown Tulsa on Sunday spoke with FOX23 about the ordeal and an update on her son’s condition.
Sheila didn’t want to show her face on camera but told FOX23 reporter Brittany Jeffers that the past few days have taken a toll on the family.
Sheila said that she was visiting friends at an apartment complex near 11th and Yale around 10 p.m. on Sunday when her youngest son, Jermaine, was bit.
“The next thing you know you hear him scream and then you hear him yell,” said Sheila, “I ran out and was over there in less than second.”
Sheila said that she asked the child where he was bit and then covered his left arm in a towel and took him to the emergency room.
“I think he was scared that he was hurt and that he had seen blood,” said Sheila.
The child has puncture wounds on the inside of his left arm but was able to run and play with friends on Tuesday evening.
“They gave him some antibiotics for infection but they wouldn’t put stiches in it because of the bacteria,” said Sheila.
The dog owner told police he was walking his dog 'Chaos' on a 10 foot leash while talking on his phone, when the three-year old started walking towards them.
The owner said he told the little boy to stay back, but the child did not and the dog bit his arm.
The owner signed custody of his dog over to animal control. The next step is getting the dog tested for rabies.
This is the 3rd time the dog has bitten someone: the first incident was not reported to police and the second time Animal Control was notified but the victim did not press charges.
Sheila said that she isn’t pointing fingers. She says that owns a pit bull and that this whole ordeal is a lesson for all pet owners.
“If your dog is mean, and you know he is mean than muzzle him,” said Sheila, “If you take him for a walk put a muzzle on him and he can’t hurt anybody like that.”
The mother of the toddler said that she is just thankful that the incident wasn’t worse.
“Jermaine is a sunshine to everybody,” said Sheila.
