Muzzling order for dogs in attack

UNITED KINGDOM -- A MAN who left a dog owner lying in a park with a dislocated knee after his bull terriers savaged her pet and pulled her over, has been ordered to pay compensation by a court.

Anita Wright, 35, a financial advisor, was walking her 11-year-old pet Jasper through Euston Park in Broadgate, Preston, when Izaak Ballantine’s dogs sank their teeth into his chest and ear.

A gaping wound was ripped in Jasper’s chest during the incident on April 22, and Anita was pulled over in the struggle, dislocating her knee.

She claimed Ballantine had asked her if it hurt, then walked off and left her lying on the ground. A passer-by came to her aid.

Ballantine, 27, of Burleigh Road, Broadgate, Preston, denied two counts of owning a dog that was dangerously out of control but then changed his plea to guilty.

A bench at Preston Magistrates Court ordered that both dogs - named Kilo and Red - be kept under proper control by being fitted with a muzzle at all times in a public place for 12 months.

In addition, Ballantine must pay compensation of £150, a victim surcharge of £20 and costs of £90.
The offences were committed while he was subject to a conditional discharge for possession of cannabis but no action was taken on the breach.

At the time Anita said: “I couldn’t get up and he knew it, but he just walked away and left me. I can’t believe someone would do that.

When Jasper, who had been rescued as a puppy after his former owner stubbed cigarettes out on his ears, was taken to the vets, Anita was told it was too risky to operate on him due to his age.

She added: “I feel very angry because that lad knew what his dogs were like - everyone knows their dogs.”

Vets deemed it risky to operate on Jasper due to his age.
