GEORGIA -- Macon police fatally shot two pit bulls Saturday night on West Richmond Street after the dogs killed a puppy, tried to attack multiple other dogs and charged at officers.
A woman called police about 7 p.m. and said two men were walking a puppy when the two pit bulls came from behind a house in the 900 block of West Richmond Street and attacked the smaller dog.
The men fled, and the pit bulls killed the puppy, according to a police report.
The dogs became distracted and ran off after three officers arrived. Officers saw the dogs try to rip open a fence at a nearby home where another puppy was being kept, according to the report.
After being scared away, the dogs went to a second nearby house and tried to get to another dog behind a fence. Run off again, the dogs ran onto Houston Avenue and heard a small puppy barking and tried to rip a fence to get to it, according to the report.
Scared off another time, the dogs ran onto Triple Hill Drive and darted into a yard in the 1000 block where they attacked a puppy on the porch. Officers, who had been following the dogs, tried to whistle at the dogs and get them to stop. After exhausting other options to corner the dogs, a sergeant told the other two officers to “put the dogs down,” according to the report.
One of the officers fired two shots into the ground near the dogs, causing the pit bulls to release the puppy. The dogs charged toward the officer, and the officer fired at them, striking one. The other ran down Triple Hill Drive toward Houston Avenue and then back to West Richmond Street, according to the report.
An officer saw the dog running toward a group of people and fired a shot, striking it on its right side. The dog continued to run, and another officer fired a shot.
The dog kept running and tried to climb a fence.
An officer fired a third shot and struck the dog. Although the dog fell to the ground, it got back up and charged two officers. An officer fired another shot, stopping the dog, but it got back up and charged the officers a second time before an officer fired another shot, according to the report.
Both pit bulls were killed, according to police.
The dogs’ owner was cited. Details of the citation were not available Monday.
In a separate incident Sunday afternoon in Bibb County, a Lake Wildwood resident called Bibb County sheriff’s deputies after a stray pit bull attacked his two cats, killing one of them and forcing the other up a tree.
The resident and his neighbor managed to secure the dog with a rope, and Bibb County Animal Welfare took the dog.
