VIRGINIA -- One dog is dead and police are looking for another after the pit bulls attacked officers near a Franklin store.
Lt. T.W. Whitt with the Franklin Police Department said officers were called to Southern Food Store located at 700 South Street around 8:07 a.m. Saturday about two pit bulls running loose in the store.
While checking the area, the dogs attacked one officer, biting his right arm, according to Lt. Whitt. The officer was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital for treatment, and is expected to be okay.
Lt. Whitt said the dogs went back to their yard, but were unrestrained, and there was no one home. Officers set up a perimeter around the yard to contain the pit bulls while they waited for an Animal Control officer.
When the Animal Control officer arrived, Lt. Whitt said the dogs attacked all five officers. The officers fired on the animals, killing one dog, according to Lt. Whitt. The second dog was wounded, and ran off.
Lt. Whitt said charges are pending on the dogs’ owner.
Officers have not been able to locate the wounded dog. If you have information about its location, you’re asked to call the Franklin Police Department at 757-562-8575.
