People in that neighborhood said that incident highlights concerns they've had about the same dogs.
"They couldn't go out and play because we weren't sure if they would bit or what. So, they had to stay in that day," said Faith Pitts, a neighbor.
Pitts has lived on Novack Street in Winston-Salem for more than 30 years. "We need to not have dogs running around, it's not safe. There are too many incidents of biting and it's hot."
According to a news release from the police department, Officer Yates responded to a burgary alarm call at a house on Novack Street. When he arrived on scene, Yates said he saw a door open at the home. As he approached the door, three dogs charged at him aggressively from the garage. Police say the officer was bit by at least two dogs.
Back up officers were sent to the scene. When they arrived, a third dog in a neighbor's yard charged an officer, who shot and killed the animal.
Police say dog owner is Matthew Elamin, he was given a citation for violation the leash law. He also couldn't provide shot records for his animals.
Neighbors near the house where the dogs' owner lived, told WFMY News 2 it wasn't uncommon to see the dogs roaming free.
"These dogs have been running around for a week, with the ties hanging off and just running through backyards, like they are in a dog gang. When you are at home, you want to be safe. You want to be able to enjoy the outside, as well as the inside. So, it's every important for people, who have animals to take care of those animals."
Forsyth Animal Control has custody of the two dogs while they continue to investigate the incident. Elamin could face more charges.
