Woman charged with animal cruelty at beach

NEW HAMPSHIRE -- York police charged a New Hampshire woman on June 30 with cruelty to animals after allegedly finding her dog in a hot car in the Short Sands Beach parking lot.

Allison. M. Olone, 23, 15 Parker Mountain Road, Barrington, N.H., has a court date of Sept. 18 in York District Court on the misdemeanor charge.

At 1:22 p.m. June 30, Reserve Officer Juliane Wigsten saw the dog described as a Yorkshire terrier in the vehicle, pawing at the front passenger's window, according to the police report.

The air temperature that day was 82 degrees, and the dog was panting and looked distressed, police said. The car windows were rolled down about 4 inches and there was some food in the car but no water, according to police.

Wigsten called Animal Control Officer Gareth Wilton. The officers put a thermometer inside of the car, which read a temperature in the high 90s, according to the report. At that point, Wilton reached into the car to open the door to get the dog out, he said in the police report.

The owner then approached the officers and was "rude," according to Wilton, who said he tried to explain the danger of leaving a dog in the vehicle.

Olone said she didn't leave water in the car because the dog spills it, according to Wilton, who issued the summons.
