MISSISSIPPI -- Authorities in Simpson County say a 3-year-old boy was mauled by a dog Sunday afternoon.
WLBT reports the child was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment.
Sheriff Kenneth Lewis says the pit bull bit the child's head. The animal's mouth had to be pried open to free the child.
No information was available Monday on the child's condition.
Lewis says the dog's owner killed the animal and tests will be done on the body.
The sheriff said the child's mother is related to the owner of the dog.
