OHIO -- Unsanitary conditions led to the rescue of 70 cats from a Green Springs residence this week.
Kelly Askins , shelter manager and animal cruelty investigator for the Humane Society of Sandusky County, said the animals, which included four dead cats, were taken from 220 Maple Lane Lot # 14, the residence of Barbara Shockley.
A neighbor complaint had led to the search warrant and rescue of the cats, Askins said.
"She was going to rescue them and it ended up she needed rescued herself," Askins said of Shockley.
Only a few of the cats were found to be spayed or neutered, and some of them recently had kittens, Askins said. She said because of medical conditions, 34 of the rescued cats had to be euthanized.
Askins said an animal cruelty charge is to be filed next week against Shockley. Although she wasn't cruel to the animals, Shockley was neglectful, Askins said.
Although now close to having 200 cats at the shelter, Askins said the humane society is managing.
"That's a hundred more than we should have," she said.
Askins said cases like Shockley's have become more frequent, and the only solution to stop their overpopulation is to spay and neuter cats.
"We've had a quite a few cases like this and its becoming more and more frequent," she said.
Askins said she expects the cats to be ready for adoption next week.
