Animal Control officer chokes dog to death with catch pole

Dog dies after incident with Animal Protective Services

NORTH CAROLINA -- A dog died Wednesday evening after an incident with Animal Protective Services.

Brunswick County Sheriff's Office deputies were called to a home on Pine Branches Circle, in Leland, in reference to two pit bull dogs.

According to the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, the dogs were found to be too aggressive for the deputies to safely remove once they arrived.  The deputies then contacted Brunswick County Sheriff's Office Animal Protective Services to try and remove the dogs from the complainant's property.

When animal services arrived on the scene, they were unable to safely enter the fenced-in area due to the dog's highly aggressive behavior.

Officials say the APS officer, after being pursued by the dogs and the dogs attempting to bite him numerous times, was finally able to reach one of the dogs from over the fence using a catch pole. The dog then became agitated and began violently thrashing and rolling until it finally became subdued.

According to officials, the officer, still unable to enter the fenced-in area because of the second dog, pulled the dog, which appeared to be unconscious, over the fence with the catch pole.  The dog was then taken to the APS truck where he was found to be not breathing.  The officer attempted to revive the dog using chest compressions, but was unsuccessful.

The APS officer was unable to catch the second dog after several attempts using the catch pole. A trap was set for the dog and sometime later the dog was captured in the trap and taken to APS where he was claimed by the owner.

The owner was cited for the dogs running at large.

Officials say this was the second time APS has been called out in reference to these two dogs.
