Black lab banished from Appleton after fatal attack

WISCONSIN -- A black lab that killed a small dog on Summer Street late last month must leave the city or be euthanized, said city officials, who declared the animal “prohibited and dangerous” this week.

Patty, the 8-year-old lab owned by Bonnie and Ed Miles, opened a front door, chased down two smaller dogs and killed one as it walked on the adjacent sidewalk July 23.

“She had my dog in her mouth and was swinging him around,” Jenna Villiesse, the neighbor whose dogs were attacked, said this week at a hearing.

Villiesse also received a bite on the arm while trying to separate the fighting dogs, said police community service officer David Swaney.

The Miles’ appealed the police decision to ban the dog from city limits, so the matter went before the city’s Board of Health and the full council Wednesday.

“It was a bad incident, but my dog isn’t vicious in any other way — I don’t know what happened that day, it all happened so fast,” said Bonnie Miles, adding that she didn’t think her dog should be considered dangerous.

The health panel voted unanimously to uphold the police decision.

Kurt Eggebrecht, the city’s health officer, said the owners of the black lab must relocate it or have it put down this week. If the dog is taken to another community, Eggebrecht is charged with notifying that municipality of the dog’s presence.
