Bradenton man charged with dog's death in hot car at mall

FLORIDA -- A dog died in Manatee County on Sunday after it was left in a hot parked car at DeSoto Square mall. A 19-year-old man has been charged with animal cruelty, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Dewayne Sunny Robinson, of the 2600 block of 50th Avenue East, was arrested Sunday and charged with torturing an animal with intent, according to an arrest report.

The pug's temperature, taken after his death, was 110 degrees, the report states.

About 3:25 p.m. the sheriff's office got a call about a dog locked in a white Ford Mustang convertible at the mall.

The deputy noted that the windows were up on the vehicle but the quarter windows in the back were down.

The pug was not breathing and appeared deceased, the deputy noted.

The deputy recorded the temperature in the vehicle at 110 degrees. Officer Steve Bell with Manatee County Animal Control then took a temperature inside the car and got 118 degrees, the report states.

When Robinson came out to the car, he told authorities that he takes his dog everywhere and that he was only in the mall "20 or 30 minutes," according to the report.

A friend of Robinson, who was with him at the mall, said they were coming out to give the dog water.

Robinson posted a $1,500 bond and was released from the Manatee County jail on Monday, according to the sheriff's office website.
