Brawley man charged with animal cruelty, video-recorded abusing dog

CALIFORNIA -- Brawley police arrested a man charged with animal cruelty Thursday after being provided a video showing a person physically abusing a medium-sized dog.

Around 9:45 a.m. Thursday, a concerned citizen gave police the video that shows a man kicking a dog, grabbing the dog’s throat, aggressively picking the dog up and throwing it to the ground, according to a press release.

Police identified the man in the video as James Williams, 43, of Brawley and determined that the incident in the video took place in his backyard in July.

Officers found Williams and took him into custody without incident, and he was booked into Imperial County jail.

Three dogs that appeared to be healthy were removed from his residence by the Brawley Animal Control Officer and placed into protective custody with the Imperial Valley Humane Society.

It was reported to police that the video recording of the abuse had been uploaded to several social media sites recently. Release of the video by authorities is being considered.
