Condition of dog brings animal control officer to tears

INDIANA -- A dog found Monday night, unable to walk and with its fur matted with its own urine and feces, will likely return from a vet's office to the Muncie Animal Shelter this afternoon to recuperate.

Shelter Director Phil Peckinpaugh reported that the dog seemed to be doing OK, though suffering from infections "from head to toe." Exactly why the dog can't walk has not been determined, but it does not appear to be suffered from any injuries other than the high level of infection, which is being treated.

"He seems to be much happier than he was," Peckinpaugh said Tuesday morning.

Animal control staffers will continue to care for the dog on site and monitor how it is doing. They are also still seeking information about where the dog came from; anyone with information can call 747-4851.

Previous Story
Animal control officers are accustomed to seeing dogs and cats in bad shape, but the condition of a dog picked up after hours Monday night made an officer cry.

"A 48-year-old man called me in tears about this dog," Muncie Animal Shelter Director Phil Peckinpagh said on Tuesday.

The male dog, thought to be a poodle mix, was picked up Monday night in the 3700 block of Wilson Road, his fur horribly matted and urine-soaked.

Peckinpaugh said the dog was covered in dirt and feces and his teeth were falling out, many of them "the consistency of mush."

Shelter staffers shaved the dog and bathed him Monday night, and by Tuesday morning the dog was moving around, a good sign after not having been able to walk Monday night, Peckinpaugh said.

The dog was taken to Care Animal Hospital Tuesday morning.

The dog wasn't thin, "if anything on the chubby side," but clearly in very bad health, Peckinpaugh said.

Peckinpaugh said the shelter anticipated high medical bills and was accepting donations, as well as any information about the dog.

To contact the shelter, call 747-4851.
