Paul Kern, of The Grove, Edgware, was walking his dog around Bentley Priory open space, in Stanmore on the evening of Thursday August 1 when his pet, Plum, was attacked by another dog.
The attacking dog locked its jaws on Plum and Mr Kern attempted to separate the two but it then turned on him biting his hands.
He said: “It was just a horrific attack on my dog. I was just minding my own business and it just came out of nowhere and went for my dog.
“My first concern was protecting my dog I jumped on it to get it off, got bitten. It was tearing my dog apart.
“If my dog was any smaller it would have been killed. It’s just horrible and I am shocked that something like that can happen to someone who was just minding their business having a walk in such a nice place.”
As a result of Mr Kern had to stay in hospital for two nights and have reconstructive surgery on his hands.
His dog had to stay at the vets for three nights and had to undergo surgery after the brutal attack.
The 61-year-old said: “We’re just devastated with what happened you just would not expect a brutal attack like that to happen in a place like that and we don’t want to see it happen to anyone else."
Mr Kern who is a black cab driver now faces a month off work as he cannot properly use the controls of his cab.
“I’m very angry because I have never missed a day’s work in my life and now I could be off for a month and as someone who is self employed it is just bad news.”
