CANADA -- A 50-year-old Windsor man is facing charges after the dog he was caring for attacked and killed another dog in downtown Windsor over the weekend.
Windsor-Essex County Humane Society executive director Melanie Coulter said the incident happened about 6:30 p.m. Saturday outside the Food Basics on Goyeau Street. Police and humane society officials attended the scene to discover a Staffordshire terrier had attacked and killed a Chow.
Coulter said the attacking dog was tied up outside of the store and the Chow was walking by with its owner when the attack ensued.
The Staffordshire terrier is a restricted breed and falls under the general definition of a pit bull-type dog, said Coulter.
Windsor police Det. Jim Coughlin said the man who was in charge of attacking dog during the incident faces two bylaw charges: fail to attach muzzle and fail to keep restricted dog controlled.
The two dogs were comparable in size, said Coulter. She said it is unknown why the attack occurred but there are many possible reasons.
"Without knowing the circumstances, it's hard to say why this happened, but there are dogs that really don't get along with other dogs," said Coulter. "Sometimes it's just that they weren't socialized at a young age properly so they don't get along with other dogs ... there can be many reasons why dogs fight."
Coulter said humane society officials are conducting a dangerous-dog investigation. Once a designation is determined by the humane society, it will be up to the City of Windsor to decide whether a destruction order is necessary, which would result in the attacking dog being put down, said Coulter.
