According to the Spartanburg Humane Society, Thor, an 18-month-old bulldog, did not survive the night, dying at Care Animal Regional Emergency Clinic in Spartanburg.
RIP Thor |
When officers found him Sunday, the animal was showing telltale signs of heat stroke. He was panting heavily, breathing rapidly, drooling all over the car and appeared to be in shock, not barking at the officers as they approached the car, according to a Spartanburg Public Safety Department incident report.
Officers responded to the parking lot near Sears at about 3 p.m. The first officer on scene noted that Thor was making a wheezing sound. By the time a sergeant arrived, the dog was lying on the passenger seat with his tongue hanging out.
Officers broke the window to get to Thor, who had a chain around his neck that was hooked to something inside the car, the report states. The dog vomited, and his tongue had turned purple, according to the report. An officer tried to give the dog some water, but he was too weak to drink.
[Why did the first officer have stand and watch this poor dog dying until a supervisor showed up? Break the damn window and save the dog! I'd rather do the right thing now and deal with the consequences later.]
The dog's owner, Tony Lee Davis, walked up to the car while officers were there. Davis, 33, of 934 Hutch Mountain Road, Fletcher, N.C., was arrested and charged with ill treatment of animals, according to online jail records. Davis was later released from the Spartanburg County Detention Facility and could not be reached for comment Monday.
