TEXAS -- Eight people suspected of entering the United States illegally are in custody after they were found hiding in a horse trailer Tuesday.
At 9:44 a.m., a Victoria County Sheriff's Office deputy stopped a white Chevrolet pickup hauling a horse trailer on suspicion of having a registration violation in the 6200 block of U.S. Highway 59 North, said Sgt. Travis Gundelach with the sheriff's office.
The vehicle turned off the highway and drove to the brush line behind the Fed Ex office on U.S. 59.
Two people fled from the truck and were not captured. The deputy found the other eight people, seven adults and one minor, hiding in the trailer behind two horses.
Victoria County Animal Control took possession of the two horses, a mare and her foal, and they are being held at the facility. If the owner does not claim the animals, they will go to a rescue service, said Joe Lopez, chief animal control officer.
The people were detained for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
