NORTH CAROLINA -- Members of the Henderson County Sheriff's Office Enforcement Unit have charged Jeffrey Scott Landers age 39, of 3766 Howard Gap Road, Hendersonville with three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

These charges arose from a tip that was received concerning neglected animals at a barn in Etowah.

Officers located an approximately 2-year-old horse and two donkeys in extremely poor condition.

After a physical exam and body conditioning evaluation by a veterinarian, officers seized the horse, both donkeys and six goats and took them into protective custody.

In addition to the three counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals, Landers was cited under the county ordinance for the mistreatment of animals and has since relinquished ownership of the six goats in lieu of a $3000 civil penalty.

Landers was released under $1500 secured bond after his arrest on July 13th.
