ARIZONA -- A Tempe man is facing animal cruelty charges after Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies rescued nine severely dehydrated and malnourished cats last week.
According to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, detectives saved nine out of 15 cats living in a filthy, abandoned apartment near 5th Street and Hardy Drive.
A 16th cat was discovered dead inside a kitchen drawer.
Arpaio said the animals were taken to Alta Vista Animal Hospital to be evaluated before they were placed in the care of Sheriff Arpaio's inmates at the First Avenue jail.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Bradley Oliver, who was the last to rent the apartment.
He admitted in an interview with detectives that he tried to find homes for the cats in June, but that he entirely abandoned them in the beginning of July.
The cats survived in the apartment with no food, water or air conditioning until apartment management staff and concerned neighbors contacted authorities.
Oliver was booked into the 4th Avenue Jail on nine counts of animal cruelty. He was released from jail on $1,800 bond.
