Pit bull quarantined after biting child in Providence

RHODE ISLAND -- An 11-year-old boy was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital Monday after being injured by a pitbull at a friend's house on Grande Street.

Providence animal control has taken the dog for a 10-day quarantine to determine whether it has rabies, according to David Holden, director of the Providence Animal Shelter. He is waiting to see the police report to determine what happened and how to proceed.

The boy's mother, Tina Desilets, of 52 Grande St., said the boy was going to the store when he stopped at a friend's house and the friend's dog bit him on the mouth. She said her mother and sister took her son to Hasbro, where he received stitches.

Aubrey Torres of 31-1/2 Grande St., where the incident occurred, said her dog Cimba, a brindle pitbull, jumped on the boy because he had a basketball in his hands and the dog wanted to play. She said when Cimba jumped on the boy his paw caught the boy in the mouth. Torres said she walked the boy home to his mother on Grande Street.
